How to Determine when to Replace Your Fence

Why Replacing Your Fence is Important

If you look into your yard and notice that everything has come to life aside from your fence, it may be time to consider replacing it. Not only does a faulty fence look aesthetically unappealing, but it can also become a security liability and invite unwelcome bugs and other critters to set up shop around your yard. While there are times where simply replacing a board or damaged fence post is acceptable, there is a point where it is significantly safer and more cost-effective to replace the entire system with a stronger and more reliable version.

4 Signs It’s Time to Replace Your Fence

As a homeowner, maintaining your home so that it is both appealing and functional is an important job. If you’re unsure whether or not it’s time to invest in a new fence, here are a few signs you can look out for that may indicate that a total fence replacement is necessary:

  • Structure is Leaning Over: If your fence is broken in places, it is more likely to begin leaning over due to its weak points. If you notice that it is starting to collapse or lean over to one side, it’s time to get it replaced not only for aesthetic reasons but also for safety.
  • Broken or Missing Boards: If you are able to see through your fence because of broken or missing boards, your fence is no longer serving its purpose. If there are no rotting boards around the area where boards are broken or missing, you may just need to replace this section but in all other cases, it’s time to get the entire fence replaced.
  • Wood Decay: If your fence is rotting, you will notice either grey or yellow stains on your fence. Seeing these colors may indicate mold growth that can only be removed by replacing the fence. To prevent rotting in the future, consider installing a fence made from a different type of material, such as treated lumber.
  • Expensive Repairs: If it seems like you are constantly making repairs, then it may be time to build a new fence. If you anticipate having to make small replacements every year, you may be better off replacing your entire fence to save money in the long-term.
